Top Seal Lateral Sealing![]() |
| It has been known for many years that relining of main sewer lines did not solve the problem of ground water infiltration and root growth, because it was transferred to the lateral cuts. Early attempts were made by grouting the lateral cuts with an acryl amide gel, but a more permanent solution was needed.
In 1999 AMerik introduced the first permanent seal. This pre-impregnated fiberglass insert is brought into place on a self propelled inflatable applicator through the main line. Its 7 minute UV-light cure time means that for the first time one sealing crew can keep up with the liner installation crew. ![]() Installed Top Seal Today's lateral seal has many features in common with the early installations but of course some features have been changed to accommodate lessons learned. Opposite to felt seals which normally comes dry and are impregnated on the job site with an ambient cured resin, the Top Seal comes pre-impregnated wrapped in a black foil and have a 4 month storage time by room temperature but cures in just 7 minutes when the UV-light built into the applicator is activated. ![]() Pre-impregnated laminate wrapped in foil Another feature is the flexibility of the laminate which allows for the use of the same laminate both in 90 and 45 degree connections but still ensures that the minimum wall thickness is maintained. Today's American built equipment is fast with a powerful transporter which easily travels the full distance between manholes. |
